Analytic Recipe #8: A New Perspective: Migraines and Pharmacogenomics
Migraines drive significant healthcare costs and productivity loss for employers and health plans, often compounded by medication cycling, ER visits, and complex comorbidities.
Health Analytics Connect’s Migraine-Focused Analytic Recipe™ uses claims-based analytics to identify gaps in care and determine when pharmacogenomics (PGx) may be clinically and financially appropriate. By starting with data—not testing—employers can target smarter interventions, improve care pathways, and measure real impact.

Analytic Recipe #7: The Rising Cost of ER
Emergency Room (ER) visits are placing increasing financial pressure on employer-sponsored health plans, now representing roughly 6% of total plan spending. The rise is driven by two key factors: growing utilization and higher costs per visit. Nationwide, ER visits per capita continue to climb, often due to limited access to primary care. At the same time, billing at higher acuity levels, expanded diagnostic testing, and rising hospital charges are pushing per-visit costs upward.
For employees — especially those enrolled in high-deductible health plans — this trend can mean significant and unpredictable out-of-pocket expenses.
Health Analytics Connect (HAC) helps employers address these challenges by leveraging de-identified claims data, advanced analytics, and targeted reporting tools to identify cost drivers, benchmark utilization, and guide strategic benefit design. By improving visibility into ER trends and promoting lower-cost care alternatives when appropriate, employers can better manage costs while supporting employee health and financial well-being.

Analytic Recipe #4: Harnessing Data Analytics to Combat PAD
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) affects 7% of the U.S. population, driven by rising diabetes, obesity, and hypertension rates. PAD leads to severe health consequences, including amputation and higher mortality rates. The condition is costly, particularly for patients with multiple chronic conditions, with healthcare expenses five times higher than for those with PAD alone. Effective management requires early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment. Strategic data analytics can improve PAD care by identifying risks, optimizing resource use, and personalizing interventions. A collaborative, data-driven approach can enhance patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

Analytic Recipe #2: Childhood Obesity in the United States: A Complex Challenge Requiring Multifaceted Solutions
Childhood obesity has emerged as a critical public health concern in the United States, affecting millions of children and posing severe health risks. Alarming statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal a distressing threefold increase in childhood obesity rates over the past three decades, and this upward trend shows no signs of slowing down. Currently, over 20% of children between the ages of 2 and 19 grapple with the challenges of obesity, but the prevalence is not uniform. It varies dramatically across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic lines, making it a complex issue that demands multifaceted solutions.

Analytic Recipe #1: Analysis of Rising Pharmacy Costs and Trends in GLP-1/SGLT-2 Drug Utilization
This research report investigates the escalating pharmacy costs within the healthcare industry, focusing on the substantial increase in allowed pharmacy per member per month (PMPM) expenditures associated with GLP-1 and SGLT-2 drugs. These medications, initially designed for diabetes management, are now gaining popularity as practical tools for weight loss. Our study reveals a 16% rise in allowed pharmacy PMPM over the last two study periods, with GLP-1 and SGLT-2 drugs responsible for more than 40% of the net overall pharmacy trend. This report examines these drugs' demographic and usage patterns within different cohorts and sub-cohorts, highlighting the potential implications for healthcare costs and patient care.

The Hollywood Diet
Recent research from Health Analytics Connect highlights the rapid growth of GLP-1 and SGLT-2 medications originally developed for diabetes but now widely used for weight loss. Over the past two years, spending among overweight or obese (non-diabetic) individuals increased nearly 800%, with claimants rising more than 900%. These drugs—often costing over $1,000 per month and frequently prescribed long term—are now a major driver of pharmacy trend, with GLP-1 and SGLT-2 therapies accounting for nearly half of recent pharmacy cost growth. Despite this surge, adoption remains relatively low (11% of the overweight/obese population and 28% of the diabetic population), signaling significant expansion potential and sustained financial impact for employers and health plans.
